Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Transportation released a report of statistics on traffic fatalities between 2004 and 2008.  Nationwide, there were 187, 796 car accidents resulting in fatalities in the four year period.

Main causes of fatal car accidents include route, speeding, road conditions, weather, traffic controls and traffic.  In addition, the report cited distracted driving and drunk driving as other common causes of traffic fatalities.

According to the report, 94 percent of fatal car accidents involved a single fatality.  58 percent of car accident fatalities occurred in single-vehicle accidents, 35 percent in two-vehicle accidents and 6 percent in multi-vehicle accidents.

Two tractor-trailers and one car were involved in a fatal car accident last Thursday morning around 6:30 AM.  The accident occurred in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 78 just before Route 412 in Lower Saucon Township, Pennsylvania.

Investigators are looking into what caused the three vehicles to collide and one of the trucks to catch fire.  Two of the drivers had to be taken to Saint Luke’s Hospital to be treated for burn injuries.  One of the truck drivers, 52-year old Mario Chacon of Palmer Township, was killed in the accident.

Traffic on the highway was closed for eight hours.

Sunday afternoon, a 4-year old child was injured in a two-car accident that occurred just outside the Philadelphia Zoo.

Philadelphia police reported that the accident happened at the intersection of 33rd Street and Girard Avenue and caused one vehicle to flip over.  The child was ejected from the vehicle that flipped in the accident.  Officials are unsure of what caused the accident.

Emergency officials arrived on scene quickly and transported the child to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in serious condition.  A 60-year old woman was also taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries and was listed as being in stable condition.

A two-vehicle accident occurred last night between a SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) bus and DRPA (Delaware River Port Authority) vehicle.  The DRPA vehicle was traveling westbound on Spruce when it collided with the SEPTA bus traveling northbound on 16th Street.  The two then crashed into Tom Peters’ Monk’s Cafe.

Peters, who lives in one of the apartments above his restaurant, said he was awoken by the accident to see a cloud of dust and the bus partially inside his restaurant.  All apartment residents were evacuated from the building and fortunately, none were injured.

The two drivers involved in the accident were transported to Jefferson Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
