Toyota’s $5B Woes: How Recall, Litigation & Aggressive Marketing are Bleeding a Company Dry

Posted on March 9th, 2010 No Comments

According to analysts, the financial impact on Toyota Motor Corp. from its global recall could total upwards of $5 billion.

Litigation costs and vehicle recalls coupled with increasing incentive campaigns and marketing efforts are proving quite costly for the automaker. Toyota is attempting to recover from the fallout of its highly publicized recall by launching an aggressive sales campaign in North America, which features a 0% interest five year loan offer. This is a bold move for a company that lost $4.86 billion last year.

Last year Toyota launched a massive vehicle recall of numerous car models with dangerous electrical problems. The company is trying to restore faith in the Toyota name.

According to CNW Market Research, which specializes in automotive research, 7 percent of consumers previously intending to buy a Toyota will not do so. Toyota is seeing a once promising North American audience rapidly shrink as consumers are moved by safety concerns.

Mother of UP Student Killed in Crash Files Suit Against Toyota

Posted on March 2nd, 2010 No Comments

The mother of a University of Pittsburgh student killed in a 2007 car crash filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Toyota Motor Corp Monday.

Sandra Livingston, of Roosevelt, New York, filed the lawsuit after her daughter, 21 year-old Tyrene Livingston, was killed in an accident four days after seeking brake repairs for her 2007 Toyota Yaris. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles federal court, claims the fatal crash was caused by problems associated with sudden aceleration, problems which have been highly publicized.

Court documents say Livingston’s Yaris “crossed four lanes of the highway at a high rate of speed, went over a curb, crashed through a guardrail, went down an embankment, and into some trees, eventually resulting in [Tyrene's] death.”

Todd Walburg, one of the attorneys representing Sandra Livingston, said the accident had a profound impact on his client, “Her daughter was the love of her life… When she was killed, Sandra Livingston was devastated.”

An off-duty Philadelphia police officer has been arrested in connection with Saturday morning a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 95.

The crash occurred shortly before 4:00 a.m. Saturday in the northbound lanes of I-95, near the Girard Avenue exit. Two Pennslyvania State Police troopers were investigating an abandoned vehicle that was blocking the right lane of travel on the interstate when the accident happened. A Philadelphia PArking Authority tow truck was attempting to move the abandoned car when a 2007 Toyota Corolla driven by off-duty police officer Matthew Sharkey, drove over a flare pattern the troopers had laid out and struck the back of the parked squad car.

The impact of the crash pushed the patrol car forward into the abandoned vehicle, trapping trooper Matthew Sheeran. The tow truck driver, Will Kane, crawled from the wreckage and pulled the vehicle forward to free Sheeran, who was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the 23 year-old Sharkey is being held for suspicion of DUI.
