On Sunday, Father Judge High School played host to a cheerleading competition. At the competition, 5 to 10 competitors reported suffering eye irritation. Paramedics took the cheerleaders to multiple emergency rooms in Torresdale and Frankford.

Eventually, around 50 people had to be taken to area hospitals for treatment of eye irritation. Several were still in the emergency room yesterday.

Investigators arrived at the high school early on Monday morning to determine the cause of the eye irritation among competition attendees. Officials found that a sodium light fixture had broken in the school’s auditorium.

The competition was held in the auditorium and the light released a hazardous gas into the area. The emergency rooms that treated those who experienced eye irritation were quarantined.

A man who suffered a brain injury in an accident in 2006 while volunteering with Central Christian Church and Arbor Ministries was recently awarded approximately $5.5 million in a lawsuit against the church.

The man, a 37-year old business owner, went with the church to Mexico to volunteer to help build a roof for a church in Puerto Penasco. While constructing the roof, the volunteer fell 10 feet onto the concrete floor below. The fall was caused by a weak rafter board.

The man suffered back, head, and brain injuries in the fall. His injuries caused him to experience a loss in his senses of hearing, taste, and smell. In addition, the volunteer says his ability to operate his business suffered as a result of the injuries.

The lawsuit accuses Central Christian Church and Arbor Ministries of not providing a safe volunteer site, failing to provide safe materials, and failing to adequately train and supervise volunteer workers.

The Indiana Inspector General assigned officials to investigate the fairgrounds. In addition, Fairgrounds officials have hired an engineering company out of New York to investigate structural details.

An attorney involved in one of the lawsuits stated, “This was a terrible tragedy that could and should have been prevented; the responsible parties must be held to account.”

An estimated 4.5 million people are the victims of a dog bite in the United States every year and the numbers continue to rise. According to the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, from 1993 to 2008, the number of patients visiting hospitals for treatment of a dog bite nearly doubled.

“A lot of people think dog bites are from some [stray] running around, and no one knows where it lives. That happens to some extent, but to a greater extent it’s the owned dog,” said Nancy Hill, a member of the National Animal Control Association’s board of directors.

In addition, veterinary behaviorists say that dog bites most frequently occur when people, especially children, are attempting to show a dog that they are familiar with affection. For example, dogs can be startled by a person trying to hug them, and kissing, or other close face-to-face interactions, can signal a threat to a dog.

If you or someone you know has been the victim of a dog bite or animal attack on another’s property, contact the Pennsylvania premises liability lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C. at 1-800-876-5299 to discuss how to receive the compensation you deserve.

The lawsuit does not state details of how the slip-and-fall accident occurred, but claims Macy’s was negligent in its failure to prevent “slick substances” that are in a position to likely harm store patrons from being on the premises. Nell asserts that he was seriously and permanently injured in the accident and seeks damages for impairment, disfigurement, lost wages, medical expenses, pain and mental anguish.

The accident occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. near mile marker 237 of the Turnpike in Cumberland County. According to police, a tractor trailer was traveling east when a flatbed wrecker, that was picking up a broken-down car, pulled out in front of him. The turnpike was flooded with spilled diesel fuel and oil.

Three people were injured in the accident. Two people were transported by helicopter to Hershey Medical, a third victim was taken by ambulance.

Cumberland County work crews have been working to clean up the site of the accident and re-open the road. Workers had to spread a substance across the pavement to help dry the spilled fuel. The Turnpike was closed for close to five hours.
