Johnson & Johnson in trouble again

Posted on July 1st, 2010 No Comments

Johnson & Johnson finds themselves in trouble again after it recalls two more drugs, Benadryl and Tylenol, because of complaints of a musty or moldy scent.  McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, has been under fire from the Food & Drug Administration lately for issues in drug quality and failing to report those issues.

Most recently, the company has faced criticism and a number of lawsuits concerning the over pricing and understating of negative side effects in their Risperdal drug.

McNeil said that the 100-count packages of Benadryl Allergy Ultratab Tablets and 50-count packages of Extra Strength Tylenol Rapid Release Gels should have been a part of their Jan. 15th recall, but were inadvertently left out.  The odor was linked to packaging materials used for storage of the drugs, but the chemical effects are low enough that they should cause no significant health problems.

Five killed in motorcycle accident

Posted on June 29th, 2010 No Comments

Five were killed and two were injured in a tragic motorcycle accident this past Sunday evening in Lancaster County.

The accident occurred when three Harley Davidson motorcycles collided with a van on Route 72.  Officials are unsure of the order the motorcycles hit the van, but they believe all were traveling north, despite hitting the van in southbound lanes.  They are unsure of which direction the van was traveling but will continue investigating.

Three men and two women riding the motorcycles were dead at the scene, while another female motorcyclist and the driver of the van were taken to the Lancaster General Hospital.  The surviving motorcyclist was in critical condition and the driver of the van was described as in fair condition.

Police officials say that some of the motorcyclists were wearing helmets but found some strewn about the scene, indicating that some of them probably came off in the accident.

Our utmost sympathies go out to the friends and families of the motorcyclists.

Philadelphia Flyers player and son in car accident

The Philadelphia Flyers star and center Daniel Briere and his son were injured in a car accident last week.

Briere and his son were driving on Interstate 81 just north of the Pennsylvania border at the time of the accident.  Law enforcement officials say Briere was drousy when he decided to try and pass a tractor-trailer on the left.  Briere’s Land Rover then drifted into the right lane too early and side-swiped the tractor-trailer, causing it to flip.  Briere’s vehicle continued into a guard rail until it came to a stop.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, but Briere and his son were transported to Wilson Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Johnson & Johnson suit dismissed

Posted on June 15th, 2010 No Comments

A Philadelphia judge threw out the case against Johnson & Johnson after believing Pennsylvania prosecutors did not have enough evidence against the drug company.

Johnson & Johnson was suspected of hiding some health risks of their Risperdal antipsychotic and tricking officials into paying much more than they should have for the medicine.  Pennsylvania was seeking $289 million to compensate for alleged overcharges of the drug.

The Pennsylvania lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson is only the first of ten states’ cases against Risperdal.  The company also faces many charges from individual consumers complaining they overstated the drugs benefits and understated its risk of causing diabetes and other side effects.

Philadelphia nightclub accused of wrongful death

Posted on June 10th, 2010 No Comments

The Philadelphia nightclub, Dreemz, was found guilty in the wrongful death of a 23-year old Temple University student.

The jury found Dreemz guilty of continuing to serve alcoholic beverages to a visibly intoxicated young woman, Brynne A. Schuenemann, who died from injuries sustained in a car accident later that night in 2006.

Schuenemann was a responsible and conscientious student at Temple University, who also worked part time at a Philadelphia law firm.  She had plans of working as a social worker or paralegal.

The nightclub was unable to produce the names of workers working that night or certification of the appropriate training to recognize when to stop serving alcohol to customers.

Schuenemann’s blood alcohol content was almost three times the legal limit.

The court stated that Dreemz “showed reckless indifference to the interests of Schuenemann and others”.
