Friday, February 11th, a tragic dump truck accident left one man dead and 3 people injured. The accident occurred on Interstate 81 in Harrisburg just before 10 A.M. Police reports indicate that the dump truck was carrying 24 tons of road salt and that the driver for some reason did not see that the vehicles in front of him had stopped. The dump truck then rear-ended the vehicle in front of him.
The driver error caused a series of chain-reaction accidents involving a total of 5 vehicles. The dump truck rolled over a Volvo driven by 44-year old David Vogen. Vogen was killed in the accident. Three people suffered minor to moderate injuries from the accident and were taken to Hersey Medical Center and Harrisburg Hospital for treatment.
Our sympathies go out to Vogen’s family and friends during this difficult time.

State representative Josh Shapiro is currently fighting to have cell phone usage banned from cars after his fight to push House Bills 67 and 2070 during the last House session failed. His new proposal, House Bill 330, would ban all cell phone usage in cars except for adults using a hands-free device.
In addition, the new bill would make violations of the regulations primary offenses. The majority of legislation concerning cell phone usage in cars in other states makes violations a secondary offense. An individual can only be charged with a secondary offense if an officer first pulls them over for committing a primary offense. If the bill passes, officers will be able to pull over any driver they witness using their cell phone rather than having to first pull them over for speeding or another primary traffic offense.
