An off-duty Philadelphia police officer has been arrested in connection with Saturday morning a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 95.
The crash occurred shortly before 4:00 a.m. Saturday in the northbound lanes of I-95, near the Girard Avenue exit. Two Pennslyvania State Police troopers were investigating an abandoned vehicle that was blocking the right lane of travel on the interstate when the accident happened. A Philadelphia PArking Authority tow truck was attempting to move the abandoned car when a 2007 Toyota Corolla driven by off-duty police officer Matthew Sharkey, drove over a flare pattern the troopers had laid out and struck the back of the parked squad car.
The impact of the crash pushed the patrol car forward into the abandoned vehicle, trapping trooper Matthew Sheeran. The tow truck driver, Will Kane, crawled from the wreckage and pulled the vehicle forward to free Sheeran, who was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the 23 year-old Sharkey is being held for suspicion of DUI.
